As a competitive marksman, I have spent a considerable amount of time around firearms. On August 23, 2003, I was competing in a match in Wyoming, when an unlikely chain of events led to my rifle accidentally going off, sending the bullet though my left ankle. The damage was extensive and practically irreparable. After seeking multiple opinions and researching my various options, I made the decision to have my left foot amputated via the Ertl procedure. Three months after my surgery, I was fitted for my prosthetic and was able to walk short distances unsupported after only one hour of physical therapy. Undergoing the Ertl procedure was clearly the best option, and every day proves to me that I made the right choice.
Exactly a year after my accident, I went back to Wyoming to finish the shooting match I didn't complete one year earlier. I am happy to say that this time I came home with all fifteen fingers and toes! Two friends of mine also came along to film to event, and make a documentary about my story. The film will be completed soon. Information about it is available at their website. http://www.twoparrot.com/
